| 4th April 10 | Kirsty McGee & Matt Martin | Singer-songwriter Kirsty McGee recorded her new album No.5 live in one take in front of an invited audience at her native Manchester's Contact Theatre. It’s the first album to feature Kirsty with her full band The Hobopop Collective - and the decision was made to present it with no overdubs or repairs as the best way of capturing their sound. 'absolutely superb, memorable... i love her songs.' - bob harris | £5 | 7pm |
| 2nd May 10 | Jez Lowe | Jez Lowe and The Bad Pennies have been playing their songs and music of Northern England for almost twenty years around the folk festivals, clubs and concert stages of the world. "Acoustic simplicity coupled with electric vitality" was how they were described in their early days, and with half a dozen albums to their credit, along with solo albums by Jez and by other members of the group, their following has continued to increase. Strong vocals, backed by outstanding instrumental back-up on guitar, cittern, fiddle, fretless bass, keyboards and Northumbrian Pipes, have made them one of Britain's top attractions on the folk/acoustic/celtic circuit. | TBC | 7pm |
Next Plug ‘n’ Play
4th April 2010 – Kirsty McGee & Matt Martin – preceeded by a 45 min open session for those who would like to participate with their own material.
Singer-songwriter Kirsty McGee recorded her new album No.5 live in one take in front of an invited audience at her native Manchester’s Contact Theatre. It’s the first album to feature Kirsty with her full band The Hobopop Collective – and the decision was made to present it with no overdubs or repairs as the best way of capturing their sound.
The one-off show also featured several special guests from the UK music scene, including artists working in bands such as Guillemots (Christopher Cundy – Saxello & Bass Clarinet), The Brute Chorus (James Steel – Electric Guitar), The Guthries (Gabriel Minnikin – Vocals) and with Richard Hawley (Clive Mellor – Harmonica).
Alongside the Collective’s new interpretations of songs from McGee’s critically acclaimed 4th studio recording The Kansas Sessions (2008), No.5 includes live performances of brand new songs, and a new version of ‘Bliss’ from her 2002 debut Honeysuckle – the album which earned her the first of two BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards nominations (Best Newcomer, Best Original Song).
A free download of Honeysuckle will be available exclusively via her online shop at www.kirstymcgee.com on the same day as No.5 is released.
